The Boy from Lambata
Memoirs of a Combat Cameraman and Documentary-Maker
There was a child of the mountains, a peasant boy, who joined the Army, to go to war and win gallantry awards. But being literate, fate and destiny had something else in store. He became a teacher in uniform and drifted into the exciting world of mass communication.
This is the story of a soldier, who fought illiteracy with a chalk and World War II with a camera. It is the story of his life long romance with a movie camera that enabled him to go to places and witness many historic events from a ringside seat. This is the story of what he saw, felt and filmed as he fox-trotted with his camera around the world during the most exciting period in history.
At the age of ten, he came out of the dark recesses of Kumaon Hills in quest of education and a future. By the time he was nineteen, he had become a Cmbat Cameraman, shooting World War II. It is the story of a man, who, according to a former Army Officer, was "Always lively, full of ideas and ready to take any suggestion." Another writer called him, "A mad media explorer."
This mountain boy, for whom life was nothing but a creative adventure, is the famous documentary film maker N. S. Thapa. "The Boy from Lambata" is more than his story.
